Why isn't your programmable thermostat following its schedule? The most common cause by far is Hold — a mode that overrides the program and pins one temperature until you cancel it. After that, the usual suspects are a wrong clock, a schedule that was never actually saved, and a mismatch between the schedule format you programmed and the one the thermostat is running.

Almost all of it is fixable in under five minutes, at the wall, with no tools. Here's how to find which one you've got.

Start Here: Is It on Hold?

Look at your thermostat's display. If you see the word Hold, Permanent Hold, Temporary Hold, or a temperature with no scheduled period name next to it, you've found your answer. Hold does exactly one thing: it stops the schedule and maintains a single temperature until told otherwise.

There are two versions, and the difference matters.

Temporary hold is what happens when you press the up or down arrow while a schedule is running. The thermostat holds your new temperature until the next scheduled period, then resumes on its own. Harmless. Usually invisible.

Permanent hold is what happens when you press the button labeled Hold. The schedule stops running entirely and stays stopped — through today, tomorrow, and every day after — until someone cancels it. This is the one that has people convinced their thermostat is broken six weeks later.

To clear it, look for a button marked Run, Run Schedule, Resume, or Cancel. Press it. The word Hold should disappear and a period name (Wake, Leave, Return, Sleep) should appear instead. On Honeywell RTH touchscreen models it's usually a Run Schedule button right on the home screen. On older button models, Run sits under the cover.

If pressing Run doesn't clear it, pull the thermostat body off its wall plate for 30 seconds and put it back. That power-cycles the unit and releases a stuck hold.

The tell: a thermostat on permanent hold isn't malfunctioning — it's doing precisely what it was told. That's why nothing you re-program ever seems to take effect. The program is fine. It just isn't being run.

The Seven-Point Checklist

Work down this list in order. The first four account for the overwhelming majority of "my thermostat ignores its schedule" complaints.

1. It's on Hold.

Covered above. Check this before anything else — it costs ten seconds and it's usually the answer.

2. The clock or day is wrong.

A programmable thermostat runs the schedule off its internal clock. If it thinks it's Tuesday at 3pm when it's actually Saturday at 7am, every setpoint fires at the wrong hour — which looks identical to no schedule at all. Check the time and the day of the week. This is also the one that quietly breaks twice a year at Daylight Saving Time on any model that doesn't adjust itself.

3. The batteries died — or you just changed them.

On most models the schedule itself lives in permanent memory and survives a battery swap. The clock usually doesn't. So you replace the batteries, the schedule is intact, the time resets to 12:00, and the thermostat starts running a perfectly good program against a meaningless clock. Always re-check the time after a battery change.

4. The schedule was never saved.

Programming isn't finished when the numbers look right — it's finished when you press Done, Save, or Set and the display stops blinking. Walk away mid-edit and most units discard the changes and revert. If you programmed it and nothing changed, program it again and watch for the blinking to stop before you leave.

5. You programmed one day, not the week.

This is the sneaky one. If your thermostat is set to 5-2 or 5-1-1 mode, programming "Monday" sets all five weekdays — but the weekend runs a separate program you may never have touched. On 7-day models, the opposite trap: setting Monday sets Monday, and Tuesday through Sunday keep whatever they had. 6. Your setpoints are too close together.

If Wake is 70°F and Leave is 69°F, the schedule is running — you just can't feel it. Nothing appears to happen because nothing much is happening. The US Department of Energy's setback guidance is 7–10°F for eight hours a day; that's the gap that produces both a noticeable change and actual savings.

7. It's not the thermostat.

If the schedule is clearly changing the setpoint and the house temperature doesn't follow, the problem has moved downstream. Check that the system mode is on Heat or Cool rather than Off, and that the fan is on Auto rather than On. Then check the air filter. If the setpoint changes and the system never responds — or short-cycles on and off every few minutes — that's an HVAC service call, not a programming issue.

When It Runs — Just Not When You Expected

A different complaint with a different cause: the schedule works, but the timing feels wrong.

Your system starts before the scheduled time. That's usually intentional. Many programmable and smart thermostats include a feature called Adaptive Intelligent Recovery, Smart Recovery, Smart Response, or Early Start depending on the brand. Instead of beginning to heat at 7:00am, the thermostat learns how long your system takes and starts early so the house reaches 70°F at 7:00. Honeywell documents this behavior directly for its programmable line. It isn't a fault, and on most models you can turn it off in the installer or advanced settings if you'd rather it didn't.

The fan never seems to stop. If the fan setting is on On rather than Auto, the blower runs continuously regardless of what the schedule is doing. The schedule is fine. The fan setting is overriding your impression of it.

Everything shifted by an hour. Daylight Saving Time. Some models handle it, plenty of older ones don't, and a thermostat an hour off runs every period an hour off.

Look at that list again. Hold gets pressed by accident. Clocks drift and reset. Schedules get discarded because a display stopped blinking while you weren't looking. Half the weekday program is set and the weekend isn't.

None of those are user error, exactly. They're all the same design decision showing up in seven costumes: the schedule lives on the wall unit. It depends on a small internal clock, a set of unlabeled buttons, and your memory of which mode you left it in six months ago. When any one of those slips, the schedule stops running and the thermostat gives you almost no indication that anything changed.
