1. Set the current time and day

This is the step people skip, and it breaks everything downstream. A programmable thermostat runs your schedule off its internal clock. 2. Enter program mode

3. Set a temperature for each of the four periods

  • Wake — when you get up and want the house comfortable

Some higher-end models offer 5-1-1 (weekdays, Saturday, Sunday separately) or full 7-day programming. Set the weekend periods the same way — usually a later Wake time and a warmer or cooler Leave setting since you're home more.

5. Save and switch to "Run"

Press Done, Save, or simply wait for the display to stop blinking. Then make sure the mode is set to Run (not Hold). If it says "Hold," it's ignoring your schedule and holding one fixed temperature — the single most common reason a freshly programmed thermostat "isn't working."

The one setting that undoes all your work: Hold. Pressing the temperature arrows on a running schedule usually triggers a temporary hold until the next period. On touchscreen RTH models (like the RTH8000 series), it's Menu → Edit Schedule. To cancel a hold, press Run Schedule or Cancel.

Emerson / Sensi and White-Rodgers

What to Actually Set It To
