Why is "Cool On" flashing on your Honeywell thermostat? It's compressor protection, not a fault. Honeywell builds in a delay of about five minutes before your air conditioner's compressor can restart after it shuts off or loses power. Leave the thermostat alone for five minutes. When "Cool On" stops flashing and stays solid, the AC turns on.
The hard part is not touching it. Switching the system off and back on can start the wait over. Below: what the flashing means, what to do, and what to check if it's still flashing after ten minutes.
What "Cool On" Flashing Means
Restarting a compressor too soon after it shuts down can damage it. So Honeywell programmable thermostats force it to wait. Honeywell's manuals for the T4 Pro, the RTH2300 and RTH221, and the FocusPRO all describe it the same way. During the wait, "Cool On" flashes. When the wait is over, the message stops flashing and the compressor turns on. Honeywell's support site puts the delay at five minutes.
Common triggers: a power blip or outage, a battery swap, or switching the system to Off and back to Cool. Each one counts as a shutdown, so the wait starts again.
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Cool On" flashing | Compressor protection is running | Wait 5 minutes without changing anything |
| "Heat On" flashing | Same delay, on a heat pump in heating mode | Wait 5 minutes |
| Snowflake or flame icon blinking | Same delay on models that use icons instead of words | Wait 5 minutes |
| "Cool On" solid | The thermostat is calling for cooling | The AC should be running. If it isn't, see below |
| No "Cool On" at all | The thermostat isn't calling for cooling | Set the system to Cool, with a temperature below the room temperature |
What to Do: 4 Steps
- Check the basics once. The system switch should be on Cool, and the set temperature should be lower than the inside temperature. Fix either one if needed, then stop.
- Set a five-minute timer and walk away. No mode changes, no button presses. Switching to Off and back can restart the wait.
- Listen and look. When the delay ends, "Cool On" goes solid and you'll usually hear the outdoor unit kick on.
- Check a vent. Within a few minutes you should feel cool air.
Don't reset the thermostat. It won't shorten the delay, and a reset can erase your schedule. The homeowner in the video below learned that the hard way.

His seven-year-old Honeywell flashed "Cool On," with no fan and no air. He tried everything: switched the fan to On, cycled the system off and back to Cool, nudged the temperature up and down, changed the air filter, checked the breaker, put in fresh batteries, and reset the thermostat, which wiped his schedule. Nothing worked. Then he set a timer and waited. The compressor clicked on, "Cool On" went solid, and cold air came out of the vents. His fix, in his words: just wait.
Still Flashing After 10 Minutes?
If you've truly left it alone for five minutes and it's still flashing, something keeps interrupting power or restarting the cycle. Honeywell's T4 Pro troubleshooting list, for when heating or cooling won't respond, covers the checks:
Check the circuit breaker
Look for a tripped breaker for the furnace or air handler and the outdoor AC unit. They're often on separate breakers. Reset it if needed, then wait another five minutes.
Check the system's power switch
Most furnaces and air handlers have a switch nearby that looks like a light switch. Make sure it's on.
Check the furnace door
Honeywell's list says to make sure the furnace door is closed securely. Many furnaces won't run with the door loose. If you just changed the filter, this is the first thing to check.
If the thermostat runs on batteries, a fresh set is worth trying too. If all of that checks out and it still won't settle, call an HVAC technician. The Customer Care number in Honeywell's manuals is 1-800-468-1502.
"Cool On" Is Solid but There's No Cold Air
Then the thermostat has done its job. It's calling for cooling, and the problem is the air conditioner. The US Department of Energy lists the usual suspects:
- Dirty filter: a clogged filter restricts airflow and cuts the AC's ability to cool. DOE says replacing or cleaning filters can lower an air conditioner's energy use by 5–15%.
- Clogged drain: check that the unit's drain isn't clogged.
- Refrigerant: it could be low or leaking. That one needs a trained technician.
Cool spring night? Honeywell's RTH manual warns not to run the air conditioner when it's below 50°F outside, to avoid compressor damage. Use the fan or open a window instead.

Why is "Cool On" flashing on my Honeywell thermostat?
Compressor protection is running. Restarting an AC compressor too soon after it shuts off can damage it, so Honeywell thermostats make it wait about five minutes. "Cool On" flashes during the wait and goes solid when the compressor starts.
How long does "Cool On" flash?
About five minutes, according to Honeywell. Changing modes during the wait, like switching to Off and back to Cool, can start it over. Set a timer and leave the thermostat alone.
Should I reset my thermostat if "Cool On" is flashing?
No. A reset won't skip the delay, and it can erase your schedule. Wait five minutes first. If it's still flashing, check the breaker, the system's power switch, and the furnace door.
What does "Heat On" flashing mean?
The same compressor delay, on a heat pump running in heating mode. Wait five minutes. Some Honeywell models blink a snowflake or flame icon instead of the words.
"Cool On" stopped flashing but the AC still isn't cooling. Now what?
A solid "Cool On" means the thermostat is calling for cooling, so look at the air conditioner. Check for a dirty filter, a clogged drain, and a tripped breaker on the outdoor unit. If those are fine, low or leaking refrigerant needs a technician.
Does "Cool On" flashing mean my thermostat is broken?
No. It's a built-in safety feature that's working as designed. It's only a problem if it keeps flashing well past five minutes with nobody touching it. Then something is cutting power, and the breaker, power switch, and furnace door are the first places to look.
