Can you add a C-wire? Usually, yes. There are three ways to do it: repurpose a wire you already have (free, but you give up independent fan control), install a C-wire adapter (roughly $25 to $50), or have a technician run new wire (Angi puts the labor at $100 to $200). Which of those are actually open to you depends on one thing: how many wires are already sitting behind your thermostat. And there is a fourth option nobody selling you an adapter will mention, which is to buy a thermostat that never needed a C-wire in the first place.
If you're reading this, you've already done the hard part. You opened the wall plate, looked for a wire on the C terminal, and it wasn't there. Now you're deciding what to do about it. Here are the four honest options, what each one actually costs, and the catch in each.

First, count your wires. It decides everything.
Before you pick an option, count the wires connected to terminals on your current thermostat. Not the wires stuffed in the wall. The ones actually screwed into a terminal.
That number is the gate:
- Four or more wires (typically R, W, Y, G) means every option below is available to you, including the popular adapters.
- Two or three wires means most adapter kits are out. This is the part that surprises people, and we cover it in the adapter section.

Option 1: Repurpose the G wire (free)
If you have a G wire running your fan, you can move it. Disconnect it from the G terminal at both the thermostat and the control board, and land it on C instead. Your old fan wire becomes your common wire. Total cost: nothing.
The trade-off is real, though, and it's worth understanding before you do it. The G wire is what gives you fan-only mode, the setting that circulates air without heating or cooling. Move it to C and that goes away. Your fan will still run whenever heating or cooling runs, because the system triggers it directly. You just lose the ability to run the fan on its own.
For a lot of households that's a fine trade. Most people leave the fan on AUTO permanently and never touch it. But if you use fan-only mode for air circulation, allergies, or evening cooling, you'll notice it's gone, and getting it back means undoing the change.

Worth knowing before you start
This one involves opening your furnace or air handler and working at the control board, not just at the wall. Kill the power at the breaker first, photograph the existing wiring before you touch anything, and if the board isn't clearly labeled, stop and call someone.
Option 2: Install a C-wire adapter ($25 to $50)
C-wire adapters are small devices that install at your HVAC control board and use your existing wire bundle to create a common connection. They're the most recommended fix online, and for a lot of homes they work exactly as advertised.
Most of the work happens at the furnace rather than at the wall, which is the part people underestimate. This walkthrough shows an adapter going in end to end, and it is worth watching before you decide whether this is a job you want to take on.

The main ones you'll encounter:
- Google Nest Power Connector: around $25, designed for Nest thermostats.
- ecobee Power Extender Kit (PEK): included free in the box with most ecobee thermostats, though not with the Essential or Lite models. It combines the Y and G wires onto one conductor to free up a wire for C.
- Venstar Add-A-Wire (ACC0410): a long-standing generic option that lets a 5-wire thermostat run on 4 wires.
- Fast-Stat Common Maker: the outlier, and the important one. It works on cable with as few as two wires.
The catch nobody mentions until you've bought one
Most adapters need wires you may not have. The ecobee PEK requires G, R, W, and Y at the control board, and ecobee is explicit that it does not support thermostats with only two wires. Venstar's Add-A-Wire lists adding a common wire as a four-wire application — its manual does include two- and three-wire diagrams, but those add heating or cooling function to a battery thermostat rather than creating a C. If you have a two-wire heat-only setup, which is common in older homes with a boiler or a simple furnace, the two most-recommended adapters on the internet will not help you.
That's why the Fast-Stat Common Maker keeps coming up in old-house threads. It's built to add a common connection over a two-wire cable, which is exactly the case the others can't serve. Fast-Stat does note that on some systems the transformer has to be upgraded to a higher VA rating to handle the added load, which is a job for a technician.
Adapters also share the same hard limits your thermostat has. They're for 24V low-voltage systems. Millivolt setups, line-voltage systems, dual-transformer systems, and communicating equipment are out.
Option 3: Run a new wire ($100 to $200 in labor)
The permanent fix is a proper wire. A technician pulls new thermostat cable with enough conductors from your HVAC equipment to your thermostat location, and you have a real C-wire with nothing improvised.
Angi puts C-wire installation labor in the $100 to $200 range, generally one to two hours of work. HomeAdvisor's numbers land in similar territory, with electricians billing roughly $50 to $130 an hour and HVAC technicians $75 to $150. If you're having the wire run as part of a full smart thermostat installation, expect the total to climb toward the $200 to $500 range.
Two things to know. First, that estimate assumes a straightforward path. If your furnace is in a finished basement, the thermostat sits on an interior wall with no accessible chase, or you're in a plaster-and-lath house, the job gets longer and more expensive fast. Second, sometimes it just isn't practical. Some walls have no route that doesn't involve cutting drywall, and at that point you're weighing a $69.99 thermostat against real construction.
Run the actual math before you commit. A $130 smart thermostat plus a $30 adapter plus an hour of a technician's time is a $250 afternoon, and you still end up with an extra device wired into your furnace. That's the comparison worth making, not thermostat-to-thermostat.
Option 4: Don't add a C-wire at all
Every option above starts from the same assumption: that your house is the problem and needs to be modified. It's worth questioning that. Your wiring is fine. It's powering your current thermostat right now. The requirement comes from how most smart thermostats are built, not from your home.
Traditional smart thermostats need a C-wire because they're single-device systems. One unit on the wall handles the screen, the Wi-Fi, and the cloud connection all at once. Holding a Wi-Fi connection open takes constant power, constant power means house power, and house power means a C-wire.
CliQ is built differently. The connectivity lives on a small hub that plugs into an ordinary wall outlet, so the unit on your wall never needs constant power from your HVAC wiring. It isn't a workaround layered on top of the requirement. The architecture just doesn't create the requirement in the first place.
That also means no power-stealing, the technique some C-wire-free thermostats use to siphon small amounts of current from the heating or cooling wire, which can cause erratic behavior on sensitive HVAC equipment. And no adapter to buy, install, and eventually troubleshoot.
